How to Play Sevens

Sevens (also called Fan Tan or Domino) is a layout game for 3–7 players. You build four runs outward from the four 7s, and the first to empty their hand wins.

What you need

A standard 52-card deck. Aces are low (below 2), kings are high.

Setup

  • Deal all 52 cards as evenly as possible. Some players may have one more card — that's fine.
  • Whoever holds the 7♦ plays first by laying it in the middle of the table.

How to play

Going clockwise, each player must do one of the following on their turn:

  1. Play a 7 to open a new suit row.
  2. Play a card next to an existing row — one higher or one lower than an end card in the same suit (e.g. 6♦ or 8♦ next to the 7♦).
  3. Pass if you have no legal play.

That's it. The four suits grow outward from each 7, with ascending cards on one side and descending on the other.

Winning

The first player to play all their cards wins. In a scored game, losers score penalty points equal to the cards left in their hand; lowest total over several rounds wins.

Strategy tips

  • Hold your 7s as long as legally possible — they unlock entire suits for opponents.
  • Sit on cards that opponents need (like a 6 or 8 that opens further play) to block them.
  • Track which suits each player passes on — it leaks which cards they're holding.
